Position Description:

Barrick is looking for an Open Pit Planning Engineer to join the Technical Service team. The Planning Engineer is accountable for all short and mid-range production planning, including, 1-month, 3-month and year end forecast plans that set realistic production targets to meet the overall budget requirements of the pit. The incumbent must provide all plans/designs and organize information and resources in an accurate and timely manner to assist in the pit meeting its targets. They must work well with their team and in conjunction with operations to organize resources and ensure the best decisions are made for a safe and efficient operation. A basic knowledge of open pit blasting theory and open pit surveying is an attribute.

  • Promote safe working practices and complete FLRA, 5-Point Safety Cards, NRHTs, equipment per-op checks when required

  • Participate in morning line up meetings with technical group and operations

  • Complete routine pit inspections, to keep up to date with the needs of the pit and the changes to monthly pit plans. Communicate plans and deliverables to technical group.

  • Update status map line work as required in Vulcan (In Pit, Dumps, ROM, Stockpiles)

  • Attend and/or lead daily dig plan meeting with operations

  • Update daily operations statistics tracking and produce daily/weekly/monthly production reports

  • Develop and present monthly, 3-month and year end forecast plans and schedules

  • Develop and present weekly dump plan
  • Create ROM stockpile plan as required
  • Perform monthly reconciliation calculations

  • Assist throughout Technical Service group as required

  • Consult with Geotechnical Engineering department to ensure plans are safe and viable

  • Other tasks as required

    These accountabilities are a baseline and can be modified to match business requirement 

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Mining Engineering or related field
  • 1 - 2 years of open pit experience, either operations or technical services
  • Experience with open pit engineering and scheduling tools is highly beneficial (Deswik, Vulcan)
  • Strong computer and analytical skills
  • Strong communication skills both verbally and written
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Physically capable of performing field work in inclement conditions
  • Proven attention to detail with a high level of accuracy
  • Excellent organizational, time management and office management skills
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team, as well as independently
  • Capability to multi-task, self-manage and self-motivate
  • Demonstrated good attendance and performance records with the ability to maintain these same standards

The Hemlo property consists of Williams Operating Corporation, an underground and open pit mine, located approximately 350 kilometers east of Thunder Bay, Ontario.
