Barrick Africa Middle East Region is seeking to recruit a Group Open Pit Mine Planning Engineer to join our team.

Reporting to: AME Group Planning Manager  


  • Working on a corporate level with Africa and Middle East operations Mine Planning and Geology departments to ensure that reserve and grade control models are updated and correct, and in a form useable for mine planning.
  • Assist and advise with the LOM, Medium and Short Term Plans ensuring equipment is utilised effectively and efficiently by undertaking equipment trade-off studies and develop justifications for positive outcomes;
  • Oversee Development of reserve statements from LOM plans including evaluating alternative scenarios and sensitivities, and preparation of any accompanying reports and analyses;
  • Ensure on time mid-year and year-end reserve statements in accordance with NI43-101;
  • Working with operations to ensure correct equipment is selected to meet production targets and practical operational needs. Assist and advise in completing life of mine cost models for the equipment and use these models for the selection process when required; in conjunction with appointed mining contractors.
  • Track Africa and Middle East actual performance against LOM plans, analyze production trends and forecasts, to ensure consistency with LOM parameters;
  • Provide strategic guidance to the Long, Medium and Short term Mine Planning Teams and assist them to develop production and cost trend analyses;
  • Regularly advise on revision strategies on grade cut offs based on reconciliation data and market demands as per Barrick Standards;
  • Audit of designs of final pit and phase designs and dump designs to maximise productivity, ore control and recovery, using agreed hydrogeological, geotechnical and environmental parameters.
  • Identify specific areas for cost improvement and assist in the development and implementation of action plans to achieve these gains.
  • Participate in new business studies and other ad-hoc projects.
  • Any other duties as assigned by the Group Mine Planning Manager - AME.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:                                                             

  • Mining Engineering Degree
  • Project Management Qualification


  • At least 5 - 10 years’ experience in a related role, of which 5 should have been at a management level or experience in a functional/specialist area.
  • Must be competent in the use of the Vulcan Mine Planning or Surpac suite of software as well Whittle Pit Optimisation.
  • At least 5 years’ experience in planning in an Open Pit mining environment
