Barrick (Niugini) Limited (BNL) is a company incorporated in Papua New Guinea, and operates the Porgera Gold Mine in Enga Province on behalf of the Porgera Joint Venture partners. BNL is an independently managed company and is jointly owned through an equal partnership between Barrick Gold and Zijin Mining Group. The Porgera Gold Mine employs over 2,500 Papua New Guineans, and over the life of the mine it has contributed approximately 10% of Papua New Guinea’s total annual exports.

Position Objective

The primary purpose of the Senior Exploration Geologist is to conduct exploration activity on Minex-exploration projects within the Porgera SML and Exploration Licence areas, with the objective of expanding the current resources and reserves and the discovery of new and economically viable gold deposits that will have a significant impact on the company’s earnings and growth, as safely, quickly, most cost effectively and as frequently as possible. This position will report directly to the Exploration Superintendent.

Duties and Responsibilities:

• Collection, analysis, QAQC and interpretation of geological data
• Target generation, exploration program design and implementation
• Timely management of exploration programs within the Porgera SML and Exploration Licences including drilling, geological mapping and geochemical/geophysical surveys
• Geological logging of diamond core and RC cuttings
• Development of 3D geological models to improve the geological understanding of the Porgera Deposit, surrounding regional geology
• Development of exploration models and target/project generation activities.
• Supervision and training of Minex Geologists, Graduates and Technicians
• Timely and accurate compilation of Minex/exploration results and project reviews for reporting to the Exploration Superintendent and relevant clients/stakeholders
• Maintenance and promotion of high quality standards, systems and procedures in all geological functions to ensure safe completion of exploration activities
• Maintain and develop systems for the monitoring, optimisation and reporting of project performance and return on investment i.e. cost per resource ounce
• Participate in annual budget project proposals and reviews by preparing Minex-exploration programmes and effectively manage the execution of these

To be suitable for this role, you will possess the following:

• Bachelor of Science degree in Geology 
• Minimum of fifteen (15) years’ experience in mining/mineral exploration
• Minimum of ten (10) years’ experience in gold exploration/mining 
• Demonstrated leadership, initiative and project management capability
• Proficiency using 3D modelling, and database software
• Experience and proficiency specifically with Datamine, Acquire, LeapFrog, MapInfo and IoGas will be highly regarded 
• Demonstrable safety and environmental track record
• Proficiency in geological logging of diamond core and RC cuttings
• The ability and willingness to train and develop national employees
• Current Drivers Licence

Your primary location will be the Porgera Mine Site. An on-travel allowance will be provided to candidates who reside outside of Cairns, Australia. Alternatively the Company will provide assistance as per BNL Relocation Policy to relocate the successful candidate to Cairns, Australia if the candidate holds a current visa to reside in Australia. The roster for this role is a fly in, fly out rotation on 16 days on, 12 days off.
