BNL is an independently managed company and is jointly owned through an equal partnership between Barrick Gold and Zijin Mining Group. The Porgera Gold Mine employs over 2,500 Papua New Guineans, and over the life of the mine it has contributed approximately 10% of Papua New Guinea’s total annual exports.

Position Objective

Under the direction of the Mine Technical Services Superintendent, the Senior Pastefill Engineer provides operational, subject matter expertise with respect to the safe and efficient operation of the paste plant, and associated infrastructures, delivery of paste to underground voids and planning for the pastefill operations. The Senior Pastefill Engineer is responsible in providing expert technical knowledge and drive a safety and high performance culture within the team.

Accountabilities include paste fill QA/QC, cemented backfill mix design, and planning & monitoring of paste reticulation to enable uninterrupted stope filling sequence. Additionally, the Senior Pastefill Engineer will continually assess and optimise paste performance, review associated backfill instructions at the operation, and forecast & reconcile binder consumption.

Duties and Responsibilities:

• Coordinate between processing plant, pastefill plant, mine planning engineers and mining operations to develop a backfill schedule that satisfies the mine’s production requirements
• Liaise with Processing Team to ensure optimum availability and utilisation of the pastefilling system
• Liaise with Operation’s Services Crew to ensure construction works for pastefill reticulation system are done on time and in safe and efficient manner
• Draft scopes of work for capital projects required to upgrade and optimise the pastefill reticulation system
• Manage contractors and mine employees to maintain the pastefill plant and associated infrastructures
• Ensure safe and efficient backfilling of stopes
• Design and implement drainage systems to manage water from backfilling
• Manage stope filling notes and ensure filling is aligned with hydraulic filling models
• Monitor the backfill quality and analyse the downtime trends to ensure consistent end-product at consistent placement rates
• Liaise with Geotechnical Department to ensure optimised backfill strength and cement consumption
• Initiate continuous improvement initiatives leading to cost saving opportunities whilst keeping abreast of new developments within the specialist field
• Maintain appropriate stock levels of all required consumables for the pastefill plant and ensure required servicing is done to maintain serviceability
• Monitor new technologies and investigate potential alternatives and improvements to systems and methods
• Assist the Superintendent Mine Technical Services in the development of the annual budget requirements.

To be suitable for this role, you will possess the following:

• Tertiary Qualifications in Mining Engineering (qualified & experienced Civil, Mechanical or Process Engineers with a soil mechanics background will be considered)
• Membership of or ability to gain membership of AusIMM and IEPNG
• Minimum 5 years’ experience working with mine backfill systems
• Minimum 10 years’ industry experience
• Thorough knowledge of MS Office
• Knowledge of 3D Mine Design software and experience in project management will be advantageous
• Good understanding of backfill and slurry reticulation systems
• Experience in training and development of less experienced backfill personnel in role-specific tasks
• The ability and willingness to train and develop national employees
• Proven experience in a supervisory role in relative technical area.
• Must be able to provide a minimum of two certificates relevant to the role.
• Certificate IV Training and Assessment (preferable).
• Current Drivers Licence.

This position is open to Papua New Guinea Nationals and Expatriates.

Your primary location will be the Porgera Mine Site. For PNG Nationals the roster is a fly in, fly out rotation on 21 days on, 14 days off. For anyone who resides outside of Papua New Guinea the roster is a fly in, fly out rotation on 16 days on, 12 days off.
